600HP V8 Datsun: Gotta make some space before Datsun work can begin

While it would be nice to dive right in and start working on the Datsun, there’s a bit of housekeeping to do first.

Literally.

In general, I enjoy a nice tidy shop. Nik guesses that he might too, so we’re going to take a bit of time to clean and organize.

Our goal is to get the far corner completely cleaned out, then add toolboxes and workbenches around the perimeter of the work bay.

I dream of something like this, stolen from Red Bull Racing’s Formula One shop.

Now we won’t be quite at that level, so we’ll call that the “aspirational garage”.

For the first step, we got a large portion of the back wall cleared out, then spent a couple hours driving around Houston rush hour traffic to pick up some Harbor Freight toolboxes that were on sale.

Yay for Nik’s long-bed shop truck!

Over the span of a couple weeks, we organized, scrapped, and shuffled.

The work-bay-corner started taking shape.

But the rest of the shop still needed a bit of attention.

We cleared off the back wall completely, to make room for the toolboxes.

And then unpacked ‘em!

I like where this is going.

We assembled some cabinets and moved and stacked some shelves.

And that pretty much completed the 1/3 of the shop I’ll be using!

There’s still much to be done, but at this point, we’ve built a lot of shelves and empty cabinets, so now Nik needs to go through all the stuff in the shop (as it’s his) and decide what he wants to do with it. I’m not really able to help with that, other than sporadically lifting heavy and/or awkward items, so I think the next trip out, I’ll get started on the Datsun work!

Still a bit left to do.

Thanks for reading!
